Second grade is a meaninful milestone at Western, marking students’ final year in primary schoo. During this important year, students continue to strengthen their reading, writing, and math skills while applying them in deeper and more independent ways. Literacy instruction focuses on building strong comprehension, fluency, and foundational skills, while math emphasizes problem-solving, reasoning, and real-world application. Second graders also grow as thinkers, collaborators, and leaders as they prepare for the transition to intermediate grades. Through engaging units, hands-on learning, and memorable experiences, students gain confidence in their abilities and celebrate how much they’ve grown—academically, socially, and emotionally.
