FIRST GRADE
First grade is a year of growth and confidence at Western. Building on the foundation established in kindergarten, students strengthen their reading, writing, and math skills while becoming more independent learners and problem-solvers. First graders continue developing strong literacy skills through phonics, fluency, and comprehension, while also deepening their understanding of numbers, operations, and mathematical thinking. Just as important, students grow socially and emotionally as they practice collaboration, responsibility, and perseverance. With engaging lessons, meaningful traditions, and supportive teachers, first grade helps students gain confidence in themselves and excitement for learning—preparing them for continued success in the elementary years.
